Abstract
Small businesses play a significant role in employment generation, entrepreneurship, innovation, and economic development. Despite their contribution to local and national economies, many small enterprises encounter financial-management difficulties involving budgeting, cash-flow forecasting, borrowing, cost control, financial recordkeeping, and investment decisions. Financial literacy can help business owners understand financial information, assess business risks, compare financing alternatives, and make informed managerial decisions. This paper examines the relationship between financial literacy and the sustainable growth of small businesses, with particular attention to financial planning, working capital, profitability, access to finance, and business continuity. The study adopts a qualitative narrative literature review approach, drawing on established academic literature and institutional publications concerning financial literacy, small-business finance, and business-management practices. The analysis suggests that financial literacy can support better financial planning and decision-making when combined with accurate accounting records, appropriate management systems, practical experience, and access to professional advice. The paper also recognizes that financial knowledge alone cannot eliminate external constraints, including market uncertainty, limited access to credit, changing customer demand, and rising operating costs. The paper recommends practical financial education, regular cash-flow monitoring, realistic budgeting, responsible borrowing, digital recordkeeping, and stronger financial advisory support. It concludes that financial literacy is an important managerial capability that can contribute to the financial stability, adaptability, and long-term sustainability of small businesses.
